In a move that’s totally in keeping with their already legendary status as the maddest of mad bands, The Mountain Goats have written an entire, 12-track album all about the magical sport of pro-wrestling.
The record, entitled Beat The Champ, is out on April 7th via Merge and was described by eccentric front-man John Darnielle – who originally performed solo, with just a boombox for accompaniment – as a way of reconnecting with his childhood visions (whether Taker or Stone Cold featured in them remains to be seen).
Darnielle has spoken at length about his childhood love of pro-wrestling, and the lead single from Beat The Champ, entitled “The Legend of Chavo Guerrero” is an ode to his all-time favourite.
You can check out the track below, via Soundcloud, but suffice to say this is one of those times it suddenly seems profoundly (un)cool to be a wrasslin’ fan.
