With Sting being pushed into the forefront in a WWE title match and the champ pulling double duty on tonight’s PPV, all eyes will be on The Icon to make his mark in a stacked line-up which, sadly, lacks pizzazz in spite of his inclusion.
That being said there are some solid bouts on the card, so hopefully Night of Champions will pleasantly surprise. Here are my predictions for the big night:
6-Man Tag Team Match: Neville & The Lucha Dragons vs. The Cosmic Wasteland (Stardust and The Ascension)
The high-flying trio of Neville and the Lucha Dragons makes up the perfect team to kick off proceedings. Pairing The Ascension with Stardust fits both aesthetically and athletically, too, so hopefully the booking team have some big things planned for the under-utilised duo.
6 man tags offer an excellent dynamic and if this format takes off a lot of the mid card talents could be given a fresh lease of life – especially considering we have two on this PPV to enjoy.
The Lucha Dragons and Neville will dictate the action and pace and this bout will surely be in their favour from the offset. Expect loads of cool spots and death defying acrobatics as they take the victory.
Lucha Dragons and Neville to win
Dolph Ziggler vs. Rusev
Rusev is at least entertaining in this throwaway feud, with Lana leaving him and being replaced with Summer Rae the Bulgarian Brute has been making the most of a rubbish angle by throwing fish at people and generally mocking his ex any chance he gets.
The in ring work has been a middle of the road, dull affair and hopefully this will be the end of this and both men can move onto better things.
Rusev to win
WWE Intercontinental Championship Match: Ryback (c) vs. Kevin Owens
Hopefully this is the end of Ryback’s intercontinental title reign and Kevin Owens is finally given a proper title run with some substance.
After dropping the ball with the US title angle this is a perfect chance to build Kevin Owens as an unstoppable force.
Have Owens manhandle The Big Guy and make a quick, clean example of him and then allow Owens some time to run with this title and make it actually mean something.
Kevin Owens to win the IC Title
WWE World Heavyweight Championship Match: Seth Rollins (c) vs. Sting
The first of the champ’s two title defences sees The Icon Sting in his first WWE title match and, sadly, he most likely will take the title from the awesome Seth Rollins.
This is mainly so the WWE have a legitimate reason to induct Sting into the HOF and hopefully his tenure is short lived.
The added element of Sheamus and the Money in The Bank briefcase could add an element of intrigue but sadly I don’t see further than Rollins unfairly dropping this title.
Sting to win
WWE United States Championship Match: Seth Rollins (c) vs. John Cena
The second of Seth Rollins’ matches is the one he will retain. Beating Cena clean will help keep a little bit of heat on Rollins after the Sting debacle, or before, depending on booking.
Rollins and Cena have a good chemistry and although this match is nothing new this will be the better of the two bouts he has tonight. John Cena is having fun in the ring and trying new things, admittedly a few years too late, and this could be a highlight of the night.
Seth Rollins to retain the US Title
WWE Divas Championship Re-match:Nikki Bella (c) vs. Charlotte
With Nikki Bella making history on RAW and breaking AJ Lee’s title run this is a chance for the Divas title to finally have a fitting role in this PPV, and in the wider storyline, and to possibly inject some fresh life into the title.
Charlotte Flair is a fierce competitor and after falling short, via some Twin Magic, on RAW her rematch could see her take the title from Nikki and allow the Divas revolution to step up a notch.
Charlotte Flair to win the Divas Championship
6-Man Tag Team Match: Dean Ambrose, Roman Reigns, & Mystery Man vs. The Wyatt Family
The mystery partner element of this match hasn’t been very secretive, and a fake leaked image of Baron Corbin did the rounds on the dirt sheets, while RAW and Smackdown suggest that it’s going to be Randy Orton.
The ideal situation would, obviously, be Seth Rollins pulling triple duty and reforming The Shield for one night only, but that is a pipe dream for all of us, let’s be honest.
The Wyatt Family need this big win to help them on the road to being a dominant heel force but sadly I don’t see this being the time for them.
Reigns and Ambrose and Mystery dude to win
WWE Tag Team Championship Match: The New Day (c) vs. The Dudley Boyz
A win over The Dudley Boyz will push the already excellent New Day into the stratosphere and hopefully Devon and Bubba Ray will do the duty and put these guys over.
This will be a fun bout with Xavier Woods at ringside stealing al the limelight with his excellent motivational gimmickry.
Expect tables, “Whassssssssssssssssuuuuuuupp”s and some comedy gold from these two teams, with The New Day retaining the tag team titles and shouting home about it for all to hear.
The New Day to retain
