Wrestlemania is finally here, after a brief weather warning scare earlier in the day, the show of shows is upon us, it was such a good feeling to hear an actual crowd in attendance after almost a year of covid secure programming.
Vince McMahon and the participants of tonight are out to address the crowd thanking them for their loyalty and kicking off the show.
Pretty fun opening VT with movie trailer guy voice and a Jack Sparrow knock off, say what you will about the WWE but they have one hell of an editing team.
After American The Beautiful was performed the camera’s cut straight to Michael Cole who announced the event was again delayed due to the rain.
During the delay WWE ran loads of unplanned promos and they were all great, Seth Rollins was HYPED and kept the energy levels up, good on the fly program planning and a smarter move than rehashing Pre show VTs etc.
The odd couple pairing that no one asked for, Hulk Hogan and Titus O’Neil are on hosting duties for the evening and are introduced and after a brief promo we are underway!!
WWE Title Match:
Bobby Lashley Def. Drew McIntyre Via Submission ref stoppage.
Drew McIntyre has been killing it this past year and to see him get that pop from the crowd was an excellent moment, the two behemoth’s lock up to get the bout underway ending in a stalemate but drew is riled up here. Satisfying back and forth exchanges keep both men looking strong, Drew hits a mean looking neck-breaker which Lashley responds with Stiff lariats. Big Mac manages to escape the Hurt Lock and tosses Lashley over his shoulder like he was a rag doll. impressive strength.
McIntyre hits Three consecutive Future Shocks and Bobby Lashley still manages to kick out, Lashley escapes to the outside and Drew follows with an over the top dive taking out MVP and Lashley, the momentum sways in the champions favour as he applies the Hurt Lock but Drew uses his ring awareness to evade the submission, a nice transition from a Spinebuster allows Drew to apply the Kimura but once again Lashley crawls to the ropes to break the hold. This is thrilling stuff.
Drew is fighting out of a third Hurt Lock attempt as he once again tries to rally but the Almighty Bobby Lashley overpowers him and he passes out forcing the ref to stop the match. Excellent opener.
Tag Team Turmoil Match
Natalya & Tamina Def. Ruby Riott & Liv Morgan
The winning team gets a title shot on night two.
- Billie Kay & Carmella eliminate Lana & Naomi.
- The Riott Squad eliminate Kay & Carmella
- Riott Squad Advance
- Natalya & Tamina win for a title shot
Rather lacklustre affair, Liv Morgan and Ruby Riott had some nice tag team spots but overall this felt flat.
Cesaro Def. Seth Rollins.
Sprightly start to the match with Seth Rollins pulling out a top rope Superplex into a Falcon Arrow combo which is looked really slick, Cesaro returns the offence with a flurry of European Uppercuts the crowd are firmly behind the Swiss Cyborg.
Lots of Swing evasions so far from Rollins but Cesaro manages to grab Rollins and takes him for a nine revolution Swing. Cesaro hits the Neutralizer and gets a close call, he looks deflated after the kick-out. Seth hits the Pedigree but its not enough to take down Cesaro.
Cesaro hits another devastating uppercut and hoists Seth up for an Airplane swing – which he calls the UFO- and then instantly gets 23 Swings and then hits a final Neutralizer. Solid win in his first singles match at Wrestlemania, a well deserved standing ovation from the crowd follows.
That was an exceptional match well recommended.
Raw Tag Team Title Match
AJ Styles & Omos Def. Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods.
Big E is here to announce the New Day!!
The in ring debut of the colossus Omos here and Kofi Kingston wastes no time in goading the big man, Styles and Kingston kick things off a steady clip. The veteran team doing well cutting the ring in half keeping Omos at bay and firmly controlling the pace. Textbook tag wrestling here from the champs isolating Styles.
The Smile on the face of AJ has he makes the tag is so smug and its wonderful, Xavier Woods sells the giant well backing away fearfully before trying to chop the big man down.
Omos manhandles the champs with effortless power, lifting Kofi with a single hand, really cool phenomenal elbow from the shoulders of Omos by Styles.
Omos gets the pin with one foot in a massive sign of disrespect and we have new tag team Champions.
Steel Cage Match
Braun Strowman doesn’t even get into the ring before Elias and Jaxson Ryker ambush him outside the cage, Shane viciously attacks Strowman with chairs and at one point even a steel plating from the ridge of the cage. Shane McMahon has a complete disregard for his own body and he sells like a pro. he pulls out all the usual antics we expect from him, a Coast-to-coast takes out the monster among men, as he tries to escape the cage with help from his cronies Strowman rushes into the side of the cage spilling Shane down.
For some strange reason there is a tool box atop the cage and Shane smashes it on Braun’s skull, as Shane descends the cage he stops to gloat allowing Strowman to grab his hand through the cage footholds then rip open the panel to bring him back atop the cage.
Shane O’Mac proves once again he’s a madman and gets thrown off the cage, Braun quickly gets the win with a running slam.
Entertaining match which didn’t overstay its welcome.
Bad Bunny & Damian Priest Def. The Miz & John Morrison.
Miz & Morrison enter the ring with an entourage of bunnies before their match with Bad Bunny & Damian Priest, another in ring debut as the Latin Hip-hop sensation gets to live out a dream, he gets one of the coolest wrestling entrances as well riding on top of a massive truck looking like an absolute badass and getting a huge pop from the crowd.
Miz baits Bad Bunny to start the match and he steps up to the plate, Miz eats a punch to the chin. Miz goes on the attack and gets a double leg takedown before he turns the tables as heels it up for the crowd.
Bad Bunny looks impressive and sells quite well taking a DDT and the punishment dished out from The Miz, by the time that the babyfaces get their offence in Bad Bunny has proved himself in the ring getting the hot tag to Priest who cleans house.
Damian Priest dives over the top rope taking out Miz and Morrison and signals for Bad Bunny to take to the top rope too and a dive to the outside.
Bad Bunny hit a Canadian destroyer!! then gets the win with a Doomsday device high cross body for the win! that was a very pleasant surprise.
Bianca Belair Def. Sasha Banks
History making main event next with Bianca Belair facing Sasha Banks for the Smackdown Women’s title, this is the first time two women of colour have headlined Wrestlemania and both are deserving of this accolade.
Bianca Belair out powers Sasha in the early stages and as Sasha tries to initiate the advantage with a Suicide Dive Belair catches her rolling through and continuing to carry her up the ring steps and back into the ring.
Bianca Belair showcasing her boundless strength and agility in the early stages, Sasha Banks uses her experience to thwart a high risk 450 splash by getting her knees up. Belair hits a sit down power bomb then instantly deadlifts Sasha for another one.
Sasha uses Belair’s braid wrapped round her arm into a submission transitioning it into a Banks Statement in a nice sequence, Banks leaning into the heel role talking smack to Bianca, Belair letting her emotions getting the better of her after a close 2 call.
As Bianca goes for the KOD Banks manages to slip through and attempt a Back Stabber, this two is reversed smoothly and Belair hits the KOD and becomes the Smackdowns Women Champion.
Awe inspiring moment and the perfect high to end night one of wrestlemania. Overall this was a great start to wrestlemania and night two looked like the better card going into this event so lets hope that delivers as much.
